Who is Greta Thunberg?
Back to question

Greta Thunberg identity makes her difficult to attack

As a teenage girl with Asperger's syndrome, she is difficult for the right to attack without looking like bullies.

Context

She is a teenager with Asperger’s syndrome. Her youth makes her seem well-intentioned and honest. Her Asperger’s makes it difficult for climate change deniers to outright attack her as an individual without coming across as abusing a disabled child. In this sense, she is being used as a shield by the left to push their climate narrative.

The Argument

Greta Thunberg has Asperger’s syndrome, a condition that is akin to high-functioning autism, she also suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and selective mutism. [1] This, combined with her age, has blunted many of the attacks against her. On a Fox News panel show, Buck Sexton, a guest, was scolded for “kid-bashing” after he went after Thunberg on air. [2] Similarly, when Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles referred to her as a “mentally ill Swedish child”, Fox was quick to issue an apology and condemn Knowles’ attack. [3] Greta’s disability, as well as her age, have created the perfect confluence of personal characteristics to deflect the right’s attacks. She refers to herself as an “uneducated teenager” and cannot be reasonably expected to defend herself against personal attacks against her values. Additionally, those that are advising Greta have given her valuable information. She always stops short of recommending individual policies. This prevents the right from dismissing her as a member of the radical far left and framing her climate change message as a right vs left, liberal vs conservative, capitalist vs socialist matter. She has not publicly endorsed policies like the Green New Deal. Instead, she simply urges people to look at the science behind the issue. In lieu of testifying to the US House of Representatives, she attached a note to the IPCC’s scientific report on limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. [4] By not being drawn into a policy discussion and deferring to the science where possible, she sidesteps many of the traditional political attacks that are often brought against climate activists. [5]

Counter arguments

If the climate change movement wanted to hold someone up as a leader that was impervious to criticism, surely it would have selected someone older, with advanced degrees, who could not be attacked for being too naive or inexperienced? Greta is attacked far more than many other members of the climate change movement. She is ridiculed for her appearance and the way she talks. Her age is scrutinised and she is patronised by world leaders, including Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. [6]

Proponents

Premises

[P1] Her Asperger's and OCD, combined with her age, makes her near impossible to attack. [P2] This is a deliberate ploy from the left to make her inscrutable.

Rejecting the premises

[Rejecting P1] And yet she is under attack far more than other figures active in the climate change movement.
