Michael Bloomberg has led America's largest city

Bloomberg was the Mayor of New York City, giving him the governing experience necessary for the President of the United States.

Context

America needs a candidate with experience in political leadership and the skills that come with it: negotiation, influencing, decisive action and clear organisation. Bloomberg is the clear front runner, having served as Mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013.

The Argument

As Mayor of New York City, Bloomberg successfully united the city post-9/11. He bought about a "cultural renaissance" of New York City,[1] reducing crime, improving education and improving the city's economy, among other things.[2] With such credentials, Bloomberg is therefore the perfect antidote to the Trump era: he has proved his integrity time and time again and will be able to unite an America that currently stands divided.

Counter arguments

Being the Mayor of a large city is not the same as being President of the United States, and it is not a directly transferrable comparison. Additionally, Bloomberg's Mayorship was not universally positively received. He had numerous policy missteps, such as his 'stop and frisk' policy, banning food donations to the homeless, and cracking down on sugary drinks.[3]

Proponents

Premises

[P1] Bloomberg previously served as the Mayor of New York City. [P2] His terms as Mayor greatly improved the city. [P3] He can bring similar success to America as a whole through the Presidency.

Rejecting the premises

[Rejecting P2] Bloomberg's terms as Mayor are not universally seen as successful. [Rejecting P3] Being the Mayor of a large city does not automatically prepare someone to be President.
