Should we have daylight saving time?
Back to question

Daylight saving time reduces pollution

By reducing pollution, daylight saving time also reduces negative effects from energy usage on climate change.

The Argument

As a result of the energy usage reduction, Daylight Saving Time reduces pollution as well.[1] The reduction in pollution, in turn, aids in the world's fight against climate change. Although it only causes a small dent in the crisis of climate change, every dent counts in a battle for the world.

Counter arguments

The amount of pollution that is actually reduced as a result of Daylight Saving Time is basically negligible. While it reduces energy usage, and therefore, pollution, it also increases other means of negative impacts on the climate (specifically petroleum consumption).

Premises

[P1] Countries should be doing everything they can to reduce climate change. [P2] Since Daylight Saving Time reduces pollution, we should keep it.

Rejecting the premises

[Rejecting P2] Even though Daylight Saving Time reduces pollution from energy usage, it actually increases pollution from petroleum usage, making the apparent benefits of the concept insignificant.
