Writing for Readability

We want reading Parlia to be a pleasure, not a chore. The trick is to stay as readable as possible. Mantra: think like a post-doc, write like a 12yr old.

Writing Tips

  • Short sentences are golden, but a little variation makes reading more fun.
  • Clauses complicate sentences. If you can avoid them, do!
  • Try to avoid the Passive Voice.
  • Imagery can really help anchor ideas.


Avoid on Pain of Death

  • Typos.
  • British spellings on American questions and vice versa.
  • Being wordy when you don’t need to be.
    Where NOT at a level where.
    Many NOT a variety of.
    Not consuming NOT avoiding to consume
    Slows NOT that aims to slow.
  • Redundancies. Political correctness is in place so that people are held responsible for what they say NOT Political correctness is in place so that people are held responsible for what they say and for the information they spread to the public.

  • Don’t write like a time traveller from 1765. If they want to NOT if they wish.
