“The problem with changing the meaning of “they” is that millions of people in this country have been using a different meaning for decades. It’s as if a New York Times columnist suddenly declared that the word “eight” is the number of legs a dog has. You can ask for that change if you want, but you’ll confuse those of us who were taught to use the word “four” in that situation. You’d be better off just using a new word.”
