Should movie industry put less focus on re-makes and series?

Currently a lot of movies are remake/reboots or sequels. At times, it can seem that these films outweigh the amount of films at the cinema that are new, standalone plots. While remakes and sequels are easier to produce and often huge money makers, does this reduce the creativity that is expected of those who make movies?
